The story of Earth-List.com My name is Mike, I am the Founder of Earth-List.com and this is my story. I’d consider myself an average guy. Having an appreciation for nature and the outdoors, I have always felt that is was important to do my part to minimize my impact on the environment. I always recycle, I like to use eco-friendly alternatives; however, I have always found it difficult to locate eco-friendly products and services. When I searched Google for something ‘eco’, there were so many results that sifting through them to find the most relevant information proved to be a tedious task. There just wasn’t a centralized directory for all the most relevant eco-information available….and that’s why I created Earth-List.com. My first in depth search for eco-products was in 2004 as a Plant Biology student at Rutgers University. Specializing in Turfgrass Management, I decided to do a presentation on organic turf management, going over the environmental benefits and the products available on the market. I found it extremely difficult to locate fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides that were certified as ‘Organic’. I was again frustrated in 2006, when I was looking into converting a diesel Mercedes to run on waste vegetable oil (WVO). There was information available, but I found it to be a time consuming process to sift through the available internet resources to locate the specific WVO information, products, and services I was looking for. It wasn’t until December 2007 that the idea hit me….I should create a NEW internet resource and do it the way I would like to see it done; a centralized directory for all eco-friendly information! Earth-List.com launched in April 2008 as a local San Diego ‘earth-friendly’ business directory and classifieds. As an average guy myself, I created Earth-List.com to be for the average person looking to make a difference. The response to the directory was overwhelmingly positive by both businesses and consumers alike; within a few months I built the directory to 500+ businesses! By summer 2008, I started to realize that the Earth-List Directory needed to be expanded beyond San Diego; it needed to be developed into a global resource. My programmer and I got to work in the fall of 2008, and in December (one full year after being conceptualized) the Earth-List.com World Eco Directory was launched. So the new Earth-List was finally developed and we were ready to get to work. We did get to work, but it was literally a month after we launched the new Earth-List that I came up with some concepts to take Earth-List to the next level. I conceptualized an eco directory that contained not only a business directory and a few news links, but one that contained ALL types of media and even a green ‘Facebook-style’ community that tied everything together. In February 2009, we got to work on the 3rd version of Earth-List. After months of development, in October of 2009 we launched the foundation of the website that you see today. We are still not even close to having Earth-List fully developed, both as a website and as a business. I have so many ideas for new services and features that it will probably be a year or two before the website can catch up with these concepts. It will take time, but we are now able to add new content and features to this version of Earth-List relatively effortlessly! It’s been a natural progression up to this point, and I am looking forward to seeing Earth-List develop to its fullest potential. My philosophy has always been that it is our social responsibility as citizens of this Earth to minimize our impact on the environment. That is the underlying concept that Earth-List is founded on. My hope is that Earth-List will ultimately accomplish this goal by helping everyone to find the products, services, and information they need in order to take steps towards living more sustainably.
